The name of my company is in honor of two of the finest craftsmen I have ever known; my father Luther Collier and my grandfather Lee Estel. These two men taught me how to fix or repair just about anything. They encouraged me to learn by doing and to never stop asking “how can I make this better?” The knowledge I received from them about woodworking, craftsmanship and invention has been instrumental in developing my ability to provide you with some of the finest pickups and pickup restorations available today.
My experience and professional training began in high school with the repair of my own guitars and working as a Repair Tech at a local music store. There I apprenticed under and became a Gibson and Fender Gold Level Technician. I became Service Manager in this high volume repair shop. My professional training expanded through Red Wing Technical College with the addition of band instrument repair. This included machining parts, painting, finishing, woodworking and advanced restorations. I graduated in 1999 on the Dean’s List with honors.
In the summer of 1999 I opened Professional Instrument Service (www.fixyourguitar.com) and partnered with an incredible electronics shop- Professional Audio Service (www.wefixamps.com). This became one of the largest service centers on the East coast. Our volume was high and at this point I started guitar pickup repair and modification. After several years I had the opportunity to go on the road as a full time musician. This is where the “Pickup” addiction went to a new level. The down time in the hotels was spent dissecting and reverse winding vintage pickups. More pickup building supplies went with me than clothes.
In 2005 I met with a well known pickup winder and builder and through him many doors were opened and years of trial and error were avoided. That same year my family expanded and I came off the road, reopened Pro Instrument Service and partnered with my long time friends at Raritan Bay Guitar Repair (www.repairguitar.com) and 9 South Guitars (www.9southguitars.com). Together we are the largest Instrument Repair facility on the East Coast of the U.S. This relationship has been priceless for making LUTHER LEE PICKUPS a success.
There is no job too big or too small. We have seen just about every model of guitar. We are a warranty service center for nearly every major manufacturer. This also affords me the opportunity to study a wider variety of pickups.
My focus to help people find the tone they desire is foremost. I make every pickup personally and see them as a part of me. I look forward to working with you.
